Newsletter 3

JULY 2015

Dear Readers,

Welcome to our third issue of DELOS Newsletter! With our newsletters we keep you regularly updated with the progress of our project and make you aware of news related to DELOS, waste management and biogas production, which we hope will be of interest to you.

In this issue, we are presenting the progress of our project, focusing mainly on the implementation of pilot actions in Spain, Greece and Cyprus where the overall DELOS Stakeholders Network will play a significant role in the validation and the development of our e-Learning modules. Our training content has been developed based on the needs of the stakeholders and the biogas plants performance optimization.

Additionally, this issue includes the latest consortium dissemination activities and suggestions on conferences and events the DELOS partners will attend and might be of interest to you, with the highlight being the final conference of the project that will take place in Zaragoza, Spain. Moreover, we kindly invite you to also regularly consult our website at www.delosproject.eu.

We are happy to invite you to follow our activities with this newsletter and we are looking forward to your feedback.

Yours sincerely,

The DELOS consortium

Title
Development of an e-learning platform for the operation and management of biogas production units

Programme
Leonardo Da Vinci, Lifelong Learning Programme

Project No.
2013-1-ES1-LEO05-68066

Duration
01/10/2013-30/09/2015

Main objective
DELOS aims at promoting the process of anaerobic digestion of regional agro-wastes (i.e. olive mill wastewaters, cheese whey, cow/ pig manure) as a promising environmental friendly process for biogas production.

Partner countries
Spain, Greece and Cyprus

Consortium
Aitiip Centro Tecnológico, SciCo, Green Technologies Ltd, Marketmentoro Ltd.

The DELOS stakeholders network is continuously growing in Spain, Greece and Cyprus, comprising energy companies, policy makers, academic organizations, waster producers, public authorities and operators and managers of waste treatment plants.

If you want to become a stakeholder of the DELOS project and enjoy free training for biogas plants management, please register directly in the project’s website: http://delosproject.eu/wp-login.php?action=register&lang=en.

Each country’s stakeholders participated in the planned pilot actions, having contributed to the validation and finalization of the project’s e-learning modules. The pilot actions in each country are described below.

Spain

The DELOS pilot actions in Spain will take place on July 15th at AITIIP facilities. If you are interested to participate in the pilot action, please send an email to jal@aitiip.com

Greece

The pilot testing of the DELOS e-learning platform and the developed training material, both theoretical and technical modules followed by relevant questions for trainees’ testing, took place in Patras, Greece during the week of June 15-1, 2015. The participants in this pilot action covered a wide spectrum of stakeholders such as senior engineers employed by public regional authorities, senior engineer responsible for biogas plant operation, University Faculty members, researchers on biogas production, technical personnel in constructing companies, etc. All participants obtained access to the DELOS platform and tested the material remotely using their own Internet connection. The team of Green Technologies Ltd and the collaborating University of Patras (Prof. M. Kornaros) assisted all participants during their testing. Following the pilot action, all participants filled the questionnaires sent to them in order to monitor their views through assessment of both the platform and the content. The questionnaires have provided valuable feedback to the Greek partners and the DELOS consortium for upgrading the quality of the developed training content and the platform.

Cyprus

DELOS pilot actions took place in Cyprus during May 2015 in order to evaluate the training content and the platform usability. The Department of Environmental Science and Technology of the Technological University of Cyprus has been contacted as well as the Department of Environmental Engineering of the University of Cyprus. Both professors and students tested the content and the platform, answered the questionnaires designed and provided their feedback.

Moreover, two major biogas producers in Cyprus participated in the pilot actions such as Armenis Farm Ltd and Andreas Kailas & Sons Ltd processing around 200 tons of manure per day. Finally, Cyprus Energy Agency also participated in the piloting, providing its valuable support to DELOS effort in order to have it established in the country as a dedicated training program for biogas professionals.

The universities, public authorities and companies considered DELOS platform as a very useful training program and a tool that will help and upgrade the biogas production knowledge in the country, both in academia and industry.

4th project meeting

The 4th project meeting was hosted by Green Technologies and took place on April 21st, 2015 in Patras, Greece. The meeting agenda included updates in the workpackages progress and deliverables as well as administrative issues and planning of pilot courses.

The final project meeting will be held at the facilities of DELOS coordinator, Aitiip, in Zaragoza on September 15th and 16th, 2015.

The final conference of DELOS project has been scheduled on September 17th 2015 at Zaragoza, Spain.

The agenda for the final conference will include:

  • Presentation of DELOS Project and partnership
  • The situation of the biogas in Europe
  • The situation of the biogas in Spain
  • R&D in the biogas sector (research projects, including the Dairius project: www.dairiusproject.com
  • Case studies in Germany, Italy and Spain.
  • Round table with industries, waste producers, municipalities, biogas producers and related stakeholders.

A detailed agenda and information on the meeting venue will be available in August 2015 in our website at www.delosproject.eu

The activities of DELOS have been also disseminated by partners Marketmentoro, Scico and AITIIP through their business sites and social media pages (Facebook, twitter, LinkedIn). DELOS updates have been also planned to be posted in the national portals of Enterprise Europe Network. In addition, articles in related portals of the partners countries will be published during the last three months of the project (July 2015-September 2015). An animation video, describing the biogas situation in Europe and the benefits offered by the DELOS project, is being prepared by partner SciCo and will be released in mid-July 2015.

Partner SciCo has also disseminated the project in the Athens Science and Thessaloniki Science Festivals that took place from March 17th to March 22nd 2015 and from May 14th to May 17th 2015, respectively.

Partner Green Technologies participated in the 11th PanHellenic Symposium on Oceanography and Fisheries “Aquatic Horizons: Challenges & Perspectives, where the developments of the e-learning DELOS training platform for the operation and management of biogas production plants were presented (Koutra, E., Kopsahelis, A., Zafiri, C.,Kornaros, M., Kadena, K., Bratskas, R., Anagnostopoulos, T., Nitodas, S. and Lopez, J.A). The conference took place in Mytilene, Lesvos, Greece from May 13th to 17th, 2015. In addition, a poster on the project’s activities was presented at the 3rd INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE on Sustainable Solid Waste Management that was held in the island of Tinos, Greece on July 2-4, 2015.

events

DELOS was also represented by the project’s Coordinator AITIIP in SIBIOENERGIA, an international exposition on renewable energy that took place in Zaragoza during March 17-20th, 2015.  SI Bioenergía – I International Bioenergy Show – held its first edition with main target to gain prominence and recognition to the development and innovation in the biomass and bioenergy sectors.

Delos project was one of the exhibitors at this international fair. Our objectives were to attract the attention of the biogas stakeholders: companies, associations and technicians of the sector. The objective was very well accomplished and many people subscribed to the Delos dissemination database. A pilot training course was also offered to those who asked for more information.

Mr. José A. López (AITIIP) also presented DELOS project in a conference organized at the expo, where also the situation of the biogas in Spain was discussed in detail.
